World Health Day (WHD) is celebrated on 7th April every year to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948.It is an occasion dedicated to increasing the awareness of global health concerns. Each year, a theme is selected to highlight a priority area of public health concern worldwide. The theme for World Health Day 2024 is “My Health, My Right”.
In today’s fast-paced world, health is often neglected while trying to juggle multiple responsibilities and keep up with the rat race. The theme ‘My Health, My Right’ is aptly chosen to highlight that each individual has a responsibility towards his or her own health and well-being.
So, what does being healthy actually mean?
According to the WHO, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not just an absence of disease or infirmity.
The recent pandemic challenged this very definition of health, since it affected not only the physical well-being, but also the mental and social well-being of millions across the planet. The pandemic, therefore, became a focal point on how we take our health and well-being for granted.
There is a dire need for every individual to be aware of what constitutes his or her health and well-being and the steps that each one needs to take to ensure their continued well-being.
Do you know how our changing lifestyle has dramatically increased the risk of developing chronic diseases?
Studies conducted on Indian subjects show that 42% adults and elderly suffer from atleast one chronic disease! This rising burden of chronic diseases can be attributed to stressful conditions, unhealthy food habits and sedentary lifestyle, all of which also impact mental and social well-being.
It's time we take steps towards improving our health. It’s not as difficult as it looks, it just needs a little perseverance and the will to lead healthier, happier lives. This WHD, we present some simple tips to improve your overall health:
Exercising for mental wellbeing
Like the body, your mind also needs exercise to stay healthy. Practicing mindfulness exercises, meditation, pranayama and 30 minutes of physical exercise daily can improve overall health status.
Regular or annual checkups
Going for regular or annual checkups is a healthy practice. It allows early detection of medical conditions, if any. It also helps to assess your overall health and take steps towards improving it.
Immunization
Vaccines are powerful weapons against harmful infectious diseases and have gained tremendous importance after the COVIS-19 pandemic. Getting vaccinated will not only prevent you from getting affected by harmful diseases but also will prevent outbreaks in the community.
Listen to your body
Do not avoid any physical, mental, or emotional signals given by your body. Visit your healthcare provider and take prompt and necessary steps. Take a break whenever required. Sometimes the best thing is to take one step back and give yourself a chance to breathe.
This World Health Day, pledge to give your body all the love and respect it deserves and it is sure to reward you. Small steps towards better physical and mental health will have a greater impact on your overall well-being.
