Diabetic foot is one of the most serious and costly complications of diabetes, having life-threatening and life-altering consequences.

Feet are greatly affected by high blood sugar, with more than 10% of people with diabetes developing foot problems, like ulcers, blisters, pain and foot infections over the course of their condition.

If these problems are not treated promptly, they may lead to development of gangrene and finally result in the need for foot amputations.

It is important to take good care of your feet and prevent foot infections before they begin. Here are some tips:

  • Manage your blood sugar levels through right diet, exercise and adherence to medication.
  • Check your feet daily. Look for signs of cuts, scrapes, irritation, friction, blisters and sores.
  • Care for your feet using a daily routine of washing, drying and application of lotion between toes.
  • Smoothen your feet after bathing to remove calluses, using a pumice stone.
  • Clip and clean your toe nails regularly.
  • Choose well-fitting footwear to help protect your feet from injury. Avoid being bare-foot.
  • Ensure good blood circulation by propping your feet up while sitting, wiggling your toes and taking frequent breaks (if you are sitting for long durations).
